Coolant lines to upper intake?

Post by MalcolmV8 »

Seems like this has been on here before but I can't remember the answer and couldn't find it via search.

The heater coolant hoses have these little hoses that T off of them and run to the upper intake. What was the purpose of that? To heat the intake?

on the, explorer intake they go to a air/water seperator built into the upper.to remove air from coolant system.when i installed a box upper,i just jumped them together, since i had no such seperator on the box.on the 89-93 i believe they are used as egr coolant lines.i believe the 94-95 with external egr didn't have them at all they used a degas bottle, tied into heater hoses.

Air water seperator? I have a 2000 Explorer motor. How does that work? The coolant flowing through those little pipes through the upper intake removes air from the coolant?

Since I have nothing running to those two hose connections on the upper intake that's OK right? They seem to be sealed to each other and don't bleed into the intake at all.
I'll use my factory overflow bottle to burp the system.

yes on the under side of upper is a plastic fitting thingamawats, vacume sucks until liquid hits it then closes.if air builds up it will suck till liquid hits it.if not blocked off it will cause a vac leak

Mine has no plastic? The two connections where the heater hoses went are steel. I can get some pics if you want. I tried blowing on each of them and I can only blow between the two connections. If I block one or the other I can't blow at all. But since this will be a vacuum leak I'll come up with some way to block them.

Thanks

Coolant lines to T-Body

Post by Injected 5.0 »

Malcolm / Stranger
The coolant lines running up to the throttle body have two purposes.
The first is to keep the throttle plate warm so that it doesn't freeze up in cold climates. The second is to help control the temperature of the throttle body around the EGR port (kinda cools it).

Mike,

On the explorers it's different. The hoses run to the back part of the upper intake itself. No where near the EGR. I'll see if I can get some pics.

Here's a pic. The two connections I drew red arrows by had coolant hoses that T'd off of the heater hoses.

I posted a question about those coolant lines before but I think it was on the old board. I'm using an engine from a 99 explorer and I'm not sure what to do with those fittings in the intake. I was going to try to get rid of those black tubes that run from the water outlet to the back of the engine. They got kind of bent up by the time that the engine was shipped to me anyway. Would it be better to route coolant up to those fittings in the intake instead of just plugging them somehow?

If they're just used to try and burp the system of air then I don't care about them. My overflow bottle and radiator will do that. I took a piece of hose about 3" long and just looped it between those two connections on the intake to seal them to each other and make sure I have no vacuum leaks.
