The T5 in my Ranger is hurt!

Post by carvinmark »

It's grinding in third and fourth, won't shift from 5th to 4th(must shift 5th to 3rd then 4th) and lastly will not shift from 1st to 2nd if I'm on it hard. I beat on it pretty hard last weekend and all this has happened. I need some advice , don't have much $ but what are my options? This is the first time I've had any T5 problems and it's making me wonder if it's enough trans, just a mild 302 with a carb.

T5 rebuilds aren't that difficult if you got the tools. I've got a video that shows you everything you need to know about rebuilding a T5 including what tools you'll need and tips-n-tricks to make the job a little faster. What I don't know is how much the rebuild kits themselves are assuming you need input shaft, main shaft, and lower.

I know Astro sells high performance T5s, although I don't know if they sell the entire tranny or if they'll sell a rebuild kit complete with everything you need to bring an empty T5 shell up to their specs.

I have a world class t5 that I was going to run in the Falcon so I may have to put it in the truck instead. Money is very tight right now or I would be searching for a t56 :x

T5 is pretty easy to rebuild, I've done it myself. You will need a press though and some bearing separators. Snap ring pliers and the usual tools. An instructional video is worth its weight in gold when doing something like that.

Myself thinks the T56 is over rated unless you got 400+ hp. Lot of them are only rated at 350 ft-lbs. The Mustang one is strong but kit runs $3995. It has the same .62 overdrive as the T-5 and the same 2.97 first gear. If you go with one with the .5 OD you might have to run a 4.10 rear gear to keep your rpm's up at cruse. At 1500-1600, you might only be putting out 120hp and with a truck, you loose 70hp just cutting thru the wind. Lots to consider. And don't confuse world class with strength. That's basically just the internal construction. Some of the WC were only rated at 240 ft-lbs. The metal tag on top will tell which one and then not hard to find how strong it is.

Or do like Chris and I did and get the "Z" spec T-5. For me up here it was only about $300 over a rebuild that would not have been as strong.

If work was going better (self employed) I would treat myself to a stronger trans . I can still drive it how it is but not as enjoyable as it was. I just got a big log home to finish up so I don't even have time to swap it yet.
My girlfriend said to put the WC T5 in and drive it like a normal person....I'm just not that normal, lol, but the WC is going in it soon just because I allready have it.
