Speedo Gear on transmission

Post by Soul »

Does any one know where I can look to find the correct speed gear for the sending unit in the trans? I'm running a c4 with 3.73 gears and 60 series tires. I used to have a book with this in there but it has since been lost.

Here is a good source of info, need to know your tire diameter, not what series it is.

Very rarely will people ever need a 23T gear. I don't know if the link mentioned it, but those tend to wear out quick since they were never meant to be run in Ford transmissions. I think they are actually Jeep gears. Most people that need to run those are people with 8T worm gears in the trans.

For some dumb reason, Ford ran 8T worms in the 94-95 T5s. The 93-back and T5 'Z-spec' are all 7T gears which are easier to setup for. But because of the extra tooth, this often forces people that would've been able to get away with a 21T speed gear to have to use a 23T.

Thanks, I think I'll try a 21 then, cause my T5 is an 88.

And if you need to change the worm gear inside the T5 pulling off the tail housing is pretty easy. It slides off the output shaft. Been a few years but I recall it been a no brainer that was super easy.

Hope the 21 works so I don't need to tear into the trans but good to know it's not to bad

Well got a little more motivation to do this, originally was going to do an aftermarket cluster but $$$$ found a way to change a resister on my tach to make it work for 8 cyl. Good news she runs great sounds good and drives wonderfully. Had a slight setback a week ago, some how a piece of teflon tape wormed its way into a needle in seat.... Small flood almost fire.
