goes boom at drag strip

Post by rojam18801 »

you guys talking about overreving at drag strip, got to tell you about me at titusville fl strip back in 1967-1968. one of my first times at a strip. i had a 57 chevy "sorry guys" with a 348 tri-power, 3 speed. running against a 421 tri-power 4-speed pontiac gto. i was ahead of him just about to hit third gear, when ka-boom. i saw hood buckel up and all kind of coolent hit the windsheld. could'nt see where i was goin. pushed in clutch so rear end would'nt lock up. right front side of car dropped to ground. tire blowed out. what next!! finally got it stopped and engine was idleing like it was new. there was a hole you could put a dinner plate in on right side of hood. i was wondering just how it still ran when it blew something that size right threw the hood. put it in gear and drove back to pit, with flat tire. when we got the hood open with pry bars found out what happened. the old generator exploded. part went out hood, part went through inner fender well and into front tire. whipped out hose's and did radiator in. got beat by gto but put on one heck of a show that day. never did find where the parts of the generator went , all that was left was the brackets.... the old trucker

Wow that's crazy. My buddies 98 Cobra threw a rod once when we were running the hell out of it with a 100 shot of spray. The rod snapped and came right out the block. It didn't interfere with the crank though. The majority of the rod was still attached to the piston so the piston was just stuck in the bore with the rod hanging out the side and it was running on 7 cylinders.
He drove it all the way home like that oil splashing out and all.
