1990 Crown Vic Cop Car

Post by plowboy34 »

Got a chance to get the engine, harness, ECU, etc for $300. He claims it's the high output engine which being the cop car I am sure it is. My question is does anyone know if this thing would be a mass air rig or not. It's about 70 miles away so thought I would get some thoughts before doing the drive. I got a feeling it is being a cop car. Dad is a retired cop and there cars always had all the hot stuff. Anyway's if anyone could help me I would appreciate it.

Thanks

If you know what the EEC is, that can tell a lot. Most Crown Vics in stock form were not MAF-based nor were they HO engines AFAIK. But since this is a Police Interceptor Crown Vic, it is possible Ford used the same 5.0L HO setup that they used in the Mustang Police cars of the same era. The Mustang Police 5.0Ls used an A9T EEC which is a brother EEC to the civilian Mustang GT automatic which used the A9P, but with less focus on emissions (gov't vehicles don't have to pass emissions tests). Even though the A9T still runs Closed Loop, it heavily favors rich over lean as compared to A9P which means most vehicles that run the A9T in stock form are high in HC and CO emissions when tested.

Even if you don't get this setup, I'm very curious as to what Ford ran for an engine and EEC in those Police Interceptor Crown Vics.

Something in the old memory kicked in so I did a little looking. Found this:
"Police cars used the 351-cubic-inch (5.8 L) Windsor V-8, which used Ford's 7200 series Variable Venturi carburetor.[citation needed] The police package was made available for public purchase upon paying a one-thousand dollar "gas guzzler" tax to the EPA.[citation needed]"
You really need to check the VIN number to be sure. Didn't see a HP rating. Might be worth checking out.

Thanks guys, as you all know I am not real EFI smart. I appreciate the ECU numbers Chris they will help alot. Never thought about the 5.8 idea Dave but once I read that my old memory kicked in from back in the Ford dealership days and seems I remember something of that. The CHP was running those Mustangs back then and it seems the Crown Vics had the 5.8. We had one of those Stangs come into the shop, complaint was Ford guaranteed them 140mph and this one would only do 135, I begged them to let me test drive it but no go....LOL. Again thanks.
