99 v8 swap
I plan to swap a 302, and AOD trans into a 99 2 wd (coil spring) ranger, does anyone know of anyone that has motor mounts, headers, oil pan, ect.. it would make my project run smoother, and what is the name of the company that publishes the swap books
Re: 99 v8 swap
Harwood Performance makes a swap manual for the wiring etc.
It's an on-line download. (they have up to 2001 now, I believe)
For motor mounts, you'll need to make something. Typically '98+ coil spring guys use their stock
mounts, with a flat plate to the block on the passenger side, and a "stepped" plate on the driver's side.
Headers are a pain, from what I hear. I'm not aware of a simple option there.
If you dig around, maybe you can find someone who's done it and get a few more answers.

Re: 99 v8 swap
Actually since he has a 99 I believe his swap is pretty much a bolt in. Find the same year Explorer donor and motor mounts, headers and all will fit right in. Others that have done this swap will chime in with more info.

He said coil spring, though. It's significantly different from a torsion bar edge/4wd/Explorer setup.MalcolmV8 wrote:Actually since he has a 99 I believe his swap is pretty much a bolt in. heres a site that might help.....untill you see the price.......duno if it would work with the newer rangers but the older ones you can use mustang double hump oil pan and 60-70s mustang or maverick exhauxt manifolds........or you might be able to use the block hugger style headers......and you might be able to use motor mounts from a 5.0 foxbody mustang

Re: 99 v8 swap
For the dirvers side mount you need something that looks like this.
The other side is just a 3/8" plate with the holes in the right place, uses the 4.0L ohc mounts.
For the headers, the only ones that clear and work are the Torque Monster headers but they cost about $780. the stock cast iron Explorer manifolds do work but not very effeicent.
I also seem to remember that with the coil spring front, you have to use the stamped steel oil pan, not the cast alum one. Got more question, keep them coming.

Dave, what about the Ford Racing headers like the ones I used on the blue ranger? do they still make those? They fit very well too.

Re: 99 v8 swap
Malcolm, They've been out of production since about 2000. Might find a set on E-Bay, part number M-9430-E50/52. I went with the cast irons and had them ceramic coated.

That's the way those things came brand new?
#2 is pinched just a little, I can't believe that's something Ford Racing would design and sell.

Re: 99 v8 swap
You have to see the stock Explorer tube headers to see the improvement! Hope the aftermarket Fords were build better.

Re: 99 v8 swap
I've often complained about what a joke it is to call the FMS Explorer headers headers. But no, they are not pinched at the ports. What you are seeing is just the shaping of the tube going from round to square. The FMS Explorer header ports are significantly larger than the head port in stock form. And because of that, they require the little tiny 12-sided exhaust bolts. Even with these smaller bolts, the inside bolt on the #5 cylinder is almost impossible to get a socket on to tighten. My header's ceramic coating is all scratched up where I fiddled with the socket trying to get the socket OFF of the bolt once the bolt was tightened down. The cast iron ports are pinched to cater to the standard stock manifold bolt. Notice:
But even with the pinch in the cast manifolds, they are still better than the stock tube style manifolds Ford put on the Explorer engines in 96 and 97. The tube manifolds are absolute crap as you can see from the pics above. I hope it was an absolute embarrassment to have released those things. Even if they weren't embarrassed, they can't have thought highly of them since they did eventually replace them with cast iron manifolds in 1998 that are much better quality and have much better flow despite the port pinch.
