Web site move

Post by MalcolmV8 »

This site will be moving to a new server in the near future - I'll try and keep the interruptions and down time to a minimal but just a heads up if the site is unavailable.

Thanks
Malcolm

Is this simply moving the site from one server to another or are there going to be URL and internet service changes as well?

"simply" moving it if you can believe it's simple :) there's more involved behind the scenes with rebuilding databases etc, updating DNS, reconfiguring email etc. but yeah basically nothing will change initially.
The plan is to get everything on a new sever as it is. Then update this forum to newer version of software and add a wiki right here on the site where it's more integrated and a few other changes. Right now none of this is possible because the current server is very limited and a lot of stuff on it is outdated making upgrades and enhancements impossible.

Hey Malcolm,
Just did a quick look thru and everyting looks transparent to me. Good job, ever thought about taking contributions for maintaining the site? Sure a lot would gladly help out even in today's job market.

Thanks for checking. There was quite a lot more involved in the move than I anticipated due to software been so old on the old server. The forum database took a bit of work getting transferred but it's done. I worked on it at night for a few days working out the kinks and finally made the move today.

I've been thinking of ways to help fund the site for sure. It costs a small chunk renting server space, bandwidth etc. The banner ads so far are doing very little but I'll give it some more time before I yank them.

Thanks
Malcolm

Count me in if and when you want some contributions! No wife, no kids, house paid off, only thing is to buy more parts!

I would be glad to help too, sure is good to be back. I have been without power for 9 day's. Makes you learn to appreciate alot of things you take for granted. Thank the Good Lord for wood heat or we would have been in big trouble. It sure is a mess here, Looks like a war zone. Tree's and poles and buildings down. Sure hope we never have anything like this again.

I know how it is transferring servers.. I just did one myself and the forum database was corrupt, so it took a bit of time getting it to work. It's not easy, and i'm still working out some of the bugs.

If you ever need some help with that kinda stuff, i'm willing to help.
