Shop Press

Post by Warpig Racing »

U am looking to buy a small shop press. I am need one for my chopper project and i would rather spend the money towards buying the toll vs payimg a machine shop. I typically would not need one for many things but im sure if i bought one big enough that i would find several uses for one.

Does anybody have one of these? If so what are the pros and cons of the one that you have.

Here is what I have narrowed it down to... a small 6 ton on amazon for $66 shipped http://www.amazon.com/Speedway-6-Ton-Sh ... 286&sr=8-1 or a 12 ton at harbor freights for $110 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=33497

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I can't remember exactly what I have, but it's a Harbor Freight Special. I think it's a 12 ton, but for some reason I keep wanting to say it's a 20 ton. I'll check it out when I head to the garage in a few minutes. Hopefully there's a big number on the jack so I don't have to clear a huge path to it (tells you how much I use it now that the Ranger project is on the road).

I got a 12 ton cummings tools press for $50 locally. Nothing fancy but it does the job. I rebuilt my T5 with it and have used it several times since on various little projects.

Malcolm,

Do you think a 6 ton press would have satisfied you needs?

Looked at it this morning, it's a 12 ton. It worked fine for what I needed although I wish it was a little taller. I had to sit it ontop of a tire and rim to get it high enough to be usable for me. I'll eventually mount it to a box or something with wheels so it'll be easy to move around and be at a useful/comfortable height. It only needed to come up maybe a foot.
