Oil pressure

Post by Hardhead »

I know this is not a Ranger question but (there is alwaya a but) I have an 89 fullsize bronce with a 5.0 AOD that was suppose to have been rebuilt about a year ago I have had the Bronco for 6 months.
The problem is when I slow down from highway speeds the oil pressure guage (electric) goes very low and sometimes the idle will slow down to about 500 RPM when the engine is at normal operating temp. this is an intermitten problem and doesn't seem to matter what the temp. is outside.

Could this possibly be an oil pump problem or bearings.

the idle and oil pressure problems are probably 2 separate problems. how many miles on it?

could be an oil problem. What kind of oil are you using?

Sorry it has taken so long to get back but wife had surgery and life in general.

CJC It has approximately 20k on the engine and I changed the oil after the problem had started. WARPIG I use walmart brand 10w30.

a 5.0 AOD that was suppose to have been rebuilt about a year ago
Is it possible it was not rebuilt? I had a neighbor that bought a 79 F250 that was advertized as freshly rebuilt 460. That was a joke. Turns out it was far from it. The seller put thick oil in it to keep the oil pressure up.

Even if it was rebuilt, do you know what was replaced? Maybe it didn't get a new oil pump.

How about the gauge? Is it mechanical or electronic? If electronic, maybe its the sending unit. If mechanical, maybe your line is loose. Checking the gauge/sending unit might be a good place to start.

I had some problems with motor oil with a SM rating. I switched to SL rated (diesel oil only, Rotella or similar) and it solved my problems. Now everything but my Camry is running diesel oil. See postviewtopic.php?t=695&postdays=0&postorde ... il&start=0

some people consider a fresh set of valve cover gaskets and a can of duplicolor engine paint a "fresh rebuild" , put some heavier oil in it (20-50 and see if your pressure improves, if it does your bearings are probly worn out, that is of course after verifying actual pressure with a quality guage, not some guage that reads low---high,
