02 harness

does anyone see any reason that you couldnt us the 02 harness from a 93 ranger 3.0 and splice it into the harness of a 89-93 mustang. also are the 02 sensor engine spacific or can u use them on any motor.

I thought that the 3.0L V6 only had 1 O2 sensor. The 89-93 Mustang EECs expect 2-O2 sensors...so you'd be 1 short.

As for the swapping, I know that there are 3 basic styles of O2 sensors:
1. 1-wire (O2 sensor ONLY, uses exhaust as a signal return)
2. 3-wire (2-wires are a heater, one is signal, uses exhaust as signal return)
3. 4-wire (2-wires for heater, 2-wires for O2 sensor signal to the EEC)

However of these basic types, I've heard rumors that GM uses a "wider" narrow-band O2 sensor than Ford does. However within the Ford family, I'm not aware of any differences between them other than the 3 main differences as stated above.

I also suspect that the HEGOs used downstream of CAT Converters in the OBD-II era vehicles aren't the same as the HEGOs used to detect AFR mix coming right out of the engine.

Chris,
On my 2000 Explorer wiring, it takes (4) sensors, the front two are the same but the back two are different from the front ones and each other. Always wondered why the back two were different from each other.

chris ,the back two sensors montor what the cats are doing ie if they are working or not that is why they are different

my 93 3.0 has 2 sensors. thats why as wondering if the harness would work. people want way to much for the mustang harness and i dont seem to be able to find one up here.

According to one of the auto parts store's websites the 93 3.0 ranger take a four wire heated sensor and the 87-93 mustang takes a 3 wire heated sensor. You won't be able to splice in your ranger harness and use the correct sensor for the mustang computer.
If you decide to use your ranger harness along with the ranger O2 sensor you need to make sure that the ranger sensor will still give the correct signal to the mustang computer... can't help you with that one but someone should know if there is a difference in signal. I bet that they are not too different but since it is a major determining factor to how the compuer will control the motor you want to make sure.
