winter project 5.0 s10

Post by Blk87 »

I found a clean 99 2wd auto 4cyl s10. it needs my 5.0 in it. So this fall ill give it a try. some points of concern are, I have a 90 manual computer and wiring harness I'll have to switch. I see Malcolm used a 40rw with a bauman controller, this is a option. The wiring should be fun GM dont do the etms like ford so wiring gonna take some time to sort out. I'll get a haynes on the truckk and start there. any suggestions will be helpful keep them clean thanks Joe

So basically you are going to use a Mustang motor and computer? Ford has a good wiring write-up using the '93' style engine harness for swaps. I'm sure I have it scanned in. There was a guy in town how did the Ford into a Cheby awhile back, just not very common at all.

Thanks Teddy! That's the one. Even some of the connector diagrams ended up in Matt Harwoods books.

You can use this harness as its a plug and play type. They claim that you only need to hook up four wires and the engine will start.

Why not put an LS1 in it? those motors are nasty and make ridiculous amounts of power. More importantly the swap will be a breeze. The S10 V6 is literally a 350 small block with two cylinders chopped off so all your accessories will mount up and the v8 will even bolt to the stock drive train. It's really slick how that works. Especially if doing a 4x4 which I know you said 2 wheel drive. I think they just used stock v8 motor mounts too but I can't remember. Converting from the V6 to the V8 ECU is a snap too, most of all the original wiring gets re-used with very little mods. Trucks TV did an episode on this swap a while ago and it's draw dropping to see how easy it is versus trying to make a 302 fit in a Ranger. Search powerbocktv.com or what ever their site is for past episodes of Trucks and check it out. That swap is actually so nice and factory looking and functioning when done it made me want to find a 4x4 double cab S10 and do the swap but really I have no use for the truck once done so the idea faded away lol.

The 4.3L V6 is virtually a 350. Almost everything is reusable such as the accessory brackets.

However the 2.8L is a typical V6 that has little in common with a SBC.

I say put the Ford 302 in the S10. The show trucks did the LS swap into a 4x4 S10 blazer and it was alot of work just to get the engine to fit becuse of the LS's oil pan design. The LS is so typical  so be very diffrent.
