Need help with transmission selection

Post by 87_Ranger »

HI

I am wanting to swap a chevy 305/350 in my 87 ranger but I'm having trouble finding what MANUAL transmission will bolt up to the small block and have decent shifter placement.

Thanks

You would most likely have to modify the shifter to fit, any small 4 or 5 speed will work.

A T5 from an F body is perfect.
Many SBF Ranger guys swap the GM tailhousing on to the Mustang T5 so that the shifter comes through the floor in the stock location.

Easy peasy.

Not sure about the "F" series tailshaft but I think it's the S-10 tail. Depending on your power level (torque), might want to think about a Tremec 500 made for the Chevy. I think eight different shifter locations, not cheap but good insurance.

Yes, I was just coming back to correct myself.
I don't know if the F body shifter is the same location as the S series.

But the SBC shares the same belhousing pattern as the 4.3 v6 found in many dimes.
And if you have to put a Chevy in it, I would not even consider a 305.

Teddy, I didn't want to even go there with the "305". I know a lot of guys with the Mustangs also look at the trans out of the 4-6 cylinders but the torque rating is so far down. Even doing the S-10 tailshaft swap on to a good T-5 ran me $400 six years ago. Did collect a bunch of info from guys who have done it themselves a lot cheaper.
Suppose the Stang is out and enjoying the weather, nice looking last time I saw it. We still have snow on the ski hill here, got a contest going to see when it goes away.

The 305 was free, the 2.3 in it now is toast. This thing is going to be nothing but a noise maker with a big cam lol. So what model s10 do I need to look for, or are they all the same t5?

The best place for info on what you want/need is Modern Driveline. Dug this info up on their site. They also have torque ratings and none of the ones for the V-6 would be a good choice. I think the same trick need to be applied, use the "F" body V-8 trans and convert to the S-10 tailshaft. If you are not going to have a lot of power, maybe the stock S-10 would be just fine. I know I have another video of the installation using the "F" body and the S-10 - "somewhere"

"GM WC About this time GM entered the WC T-5 with the S-10 and Camaro T-5. Borg Warner produced both a 2x4 and 4x4 T-5 for the S-10 with different gear ratios depending on motor type. The 4x4 model was connected directly to the tranfer case with a short main shaft and tail shaft housing. GM used the T-5 in both the V6 and V8 Camaro’s, but the gear ratios were different, as well as, the bellhousing to transmission bolt pattern. The V8 Camaro received the same bolt pattern as earlier four speeds but with a 22 degree rotation to place the shifter closer to the driver. It is believed that GM changed the bolt pattern of the V6 T-5 so that it couldn’t be installed behind V8 motors. From looking at the outside of a Camaro T-5 it is difficult to tell them apart. GM used the WC T-5 2.95 gear set only in 92-93 IROC Z Camaro’s. In 1994 GM switched to the new T-56."
