Honda chopper Project

Post by Warpig Racing »

I finally convienced my bro to sell me his Honda Chopper project. he has had it for a few years and has never finished. He needed the $ so i bought it from him at more than market value.

its a aftermarket ridged tube frame w/ an aftermarket honda CB750 (four cycl) motor that has been bored/stroked to 850cc. Its still got a lot of fabrication to finish and other things like tires, title, etc to get. It is going to be an old school bare bones chopper. Frame, motor, tires, etc. Nothing too fancy but it will be one of a kind (similar to the ranger).

Chopper project looks like fun. Seems like a lot of motor for that bike too. Just the way we like it :)

Is that a blower pulley on the v8's water pump? It looks like something you'd normally see turning 6-71 blower.

Well i had issues w/ getting the main, alt, and water pump pullys aligned. i threw the belt one day and almost overheated. So i bought the moroso electric water pump drive kit. Its an electric motor that turns the water pump. It advertised to increase HP but who knows if you really notice it. i installed it for the security in the event the belt comes off.

If you notice the alternator tensioner is nothing more than a 30# 10" mighty lift. Those gas shocks used for trunk lids. So the alt actually piviots and acts as a tensioner as well. Removing the belt at the track is a snap. Just rotate the alt and remove the belt, no tools required. The guys at the parts store never thought it would work but were very impressed when they saw it in action. Everyone that has seen it in person has made comment about how sweet it is.

As for the motorcycle engine, the base is a 750cc. Nothing special by todays standards. in the 70's when they came out it was the equilvent to sport bikes of the day. The motor should handle 9000 revs all day long. I am currently rebuilding the motor and need to decide if i want to install the big bore kit. i think you can get it all the way up to 1040cc (about 40% overbore). i think i want to drive this project on the street so i might leave it close to stock so i can afford to drive it.

Well here is a little update on the chopper. Since last post, I have completed the engine and broke it in on the engine stand (will get a video up of that soon), I have replaced the front end to use a newer style and wider wheel, I just got that oil tank completed.

So for now, the biggest hurdle is finishing those forward controls, lights, rear fender, and paint. Should be the easy stuff.

Here are some pics.

Nice man. I liked the clearance in the oil tank for the chain :)

malcolm. Thanks. It wasn't as i origianally planned but necessary. I was wanting to make a passage through the oil tank instead of the notch but i decided with the shain slacking between acceleration and stopping, it would be too much rick of it scraping and tearing something up.

Here is the video of the engine after I just got it rebuilt.

Thats awesome. I love the rusty gas tank. The 'rat rod' thing is awesome in my book. :)

Im sure on the long trips i Will pay for it. I got my paperwork in from the tax commission and I'm good to go as soon as I get the #s stamped on the frame. I have been riding it a little around the neighborhood . Found a few more deamonds to work out. Somethings not right with the charging system and I have an oil leak on the fron. i guess i missed an oil ring or 2. So when i get a weekend, Ill tear it apart and try again.

It actually rides pretty good. Just one problem that i will have to deal with. the engine is set off to the far left to get the chain as far over for tire clearance. And the rear wheel is set as far right as I can to get it to fit on in the frame. Long story short, the bike is heavier on the left. Guess no stunt riding on this one. left side heavy make the bike wat to constantly go left.

Can you center the motor and extend the shaft coming out the motor for the chain? OR how about running two chains. Motor to an intermediate shaft and then intermediate shaft to the wheel. That will allow for the offset. Just some ideas as I imagine a constant pull to the left would not be any fun on a bike.

Malcolm-

Yes and Yes. They do make an offset sprocket. Most offset they make is 3/8 and they are about $70. Well worth it if it would solve the problem but I still dont think its enough.

The other option is a jack shaft. Id imagine that it would need at least 1" offset that might be just enough. And it could be constructed for about $70. Problem with this option is you have 2 seperate chains and they both need to be adjustable. So the mountinging point for the jack shaft would have to be adjustable, then the rear wheel has adjustment for the rear chain.

Decisions decisions.

I spent the week disassembling and cleaning up everything. Off to get powder on it tomorrow and hopefully get it all back together soon. I also have to disassemble the top side of the engine and replace the timing. It is making a lot of noise so better be safe than sorry.

Here is a video of it running shortly before taking it apart. You can hear the noisy timing.
