what is the difference?

Short Block = Block with crank, pistons, cam, etc but without heads

Long Block = A shortblock with heads.

It has nothing to do with the "length" of the block. A better term would've been "tall" block. But even that would be confusing in the context of SBFs since SBF 302s are shorter in deck height than the SBF 351s.

I thought so, a buddy was telling me a long block is a longer block and I was arguing that it wasn't!!!

If the short block includes cam is it a 4.6 or 302?

If you have a 4.6 short block with a cam you have a mighty rare item...

Yeah yeah, OHC short blocks won't have a cam(s).

What I don't know is if short block , by definition, includes the timing cover, oil pump, pan, and balancer. I think some of these items are assumed included, but others are optional. If anybody finds a website from someone reputable like Summit Racing that defines what the industry accepted meaning of those terms is, I'd be really interested to know. I've always just known the most significant difference is short block doesn't have heads and long block does.

Ford sells their short blocks without the front cover, dampener, oil pan or pump.

Front cover, water pump, dampener, valve covers, oil pan and flex-plate. I see in the 2000 catalog that you could still get a brand new Explorer long block for under $1500. That was a deal.

Every company has their own perception I suppose. When I was looking at Cobra long blocks a few months ago the one I was going to buy was a complete motor except for the supercharger. The guy said it even had spark plugs and oil in it and was ready to go.

Part of the problem in talking about two complete different engine series. Your Cobra engine you were looking at is made for a very limited application. The short/long blocks from Ford can go in so many different cars/trucks it's hard to make one to fit all. They actually give the disclaimer that certain things might have to be changed to fit the chassis.
