Adding Power Steering to a v8 Ranger
I have just completed my 1990 302 Ranger conversion. After test driving it for a month or so, I have found that the manual steering is a bear. I was wondering if anyone could give some information on adding power steering? Thanks for the help in advance

get a gearbox for whatever year ranger you have. what front accessory brakets are you using? do you have the bracket for the p/s pump? if you have a mustang front dress you can use a mustang or ranger p/s pump with pulley. then just get pressure and return lines for whatever year ranger you have. you'll need a different belt too.

Find a Ranger in ajunkyard that has power steering that is the same year or interchange year as yours.Low'n Ranger wrote:Has anyone done this before? I am new at this and just thought someone might be able to provide some detailed insite.
Remove the power steering box.
Install that power steering box in place of your manual steering box.
You will need a power steering pump and brackets that fits your V8 (as the original V8 is a mystery to us and there are countless brackets and pump combonations you will have to figure that one out yourself)
Install the hoses that connect the power steering pump to the power steering box.
The lower steering shaft may be different between power and manual steering. I would suggest taking that from your junkyard donar Ranger as well
The big question is if whoever put the V8 into your ranger did it in a way that left room for the steering box.
Did an 85, just got a steering box from same style truck, mounted P/S pump(depends on what front dress you are using) hook up lines. Was really very simple. If you put a V8 in a Ranger you can handle this.

I used the front brackets and pump fron a 1990 crown vic and my power steering lines from the stock 2.9 fit right in. I also used a 1 wire 100 amp alt that I got on e-bay. The belt is the stock belt from the crown vic. Here is a link so you can see my set up. Good luck.
