Explorer rear or double sump

Post by 98V8RANGER »

Is the Explorer engine a rear sump or a double sump set up?

By default, it is a rear sump with a very odd shaped oil pan. The older 5.0Ls had a cast aluminum pan. However some of the newer ones got the stamped steel pans. All are rear sump though.

To work in my Ranger, I replaced it with a dual sump. The dual sumps require a different screen pickup because the Explorer sump is deeper than the dual sump pan is.

The reason I ask is because I am looking at windage trays and I didn't know how the newer 5.0 are set up.

Thanks
