V8 swap dilemma, with VSS.

Post by Fubarexpress »

V8 swap dilemma. I'm New the the site, I have a 1998 ranger coil spring XLT Ext. cab. It is a 2.5 banger with a 5 speed trans. I purchased a 1997 Expolrer 5.0 with 4R70W transmission. I have not installed the 5.0 yet, I have remover the 2.5 and trans. trying to get the engine bay all cleaned up and ready for the engine to be set in. With all the reading I have done on this site and others, I can not find anything on how to make the wiring changes to the VSS. All the info I can find says to make changes to the wiring at the 4WABS module. Big problem my Ranger only has RABS. Can anyone give me some help with The changes that I need to make to get past this dilemma. I know it has been done before. I have the EVTM for the Explorer, but I can't find one for the Ranger, Helms says it is not in stock at present, maybe 2 to 3weeks.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the site Bob, we're small but fun. I have the '98' Ranger and the '97' Explorer wiring both scanned it. What parts do you need? The Explorer signal from the VSS is the same as the Ranger I believe, just comes from a different source. Wiring not my field of expertice but others will sure join in.

I wish I could help on this one, but this is not an issue I have any kind of experience with or any insight on. So I was hoping Dave would chime in with some thought since I knew this was similar to his setup. I'm sure there's a way to do it, I just don't know what it'd be since I've never had to deal with it.

Thanks Dave, I think I have it figured out now. I was confusing the 2001 wiring( from other's post ) With the 1998. The wiring On the 98 is sorta Plug and play. I will keep my fingers crossed. Now I get to play the waiting on parts game. Thanks again to all.

Plug and play is about it. Only splicing or re-pinning is required in the harness that feeds the A/C and starter relay. Real easy to see if you have both the wiring diagrams.
