Re: Anyone completely removed the PCV system before?

In Denver, the pressure is closer to 12.1 PSI (24.63"wc). So as it relates to engine windage, it doesn't take much change in pressure to thin the air enough to be significant to fuel economy. I don't think the thin air in Denver is causing good fuel economy but reducing windage on the crank sh...

Re: Anyone completely removed the PCV system before?

Also I believe a pcv system would help with the catch can filling up as it will keep the pressure inside the engine lower which will help keep the oil from venting through the valve cover vents. In an n/a motor I could see that been a possibility but on a boosted motor the PCV system shuts down as ...

Re: Anyone completely removed the PCV system before?

PCV has the benefits you mention and another you didn't. The first is the emissions benefit. Blow-by from the rings gets into the crank case and if it isn't drawn into the engine will get out into the atmosphere (an emission). So for reducing emissions, the EPA wants that drawn into the engine to b...

Re: Anyone completely removed the PCV system before?

Right, I've heard of that too Dave. The issue is with this turbo car two valve cover vents go to a catch can (which catches a lot of oil) and the block itself vents to the bottom of the catch can and doubles as a drain back to the block when not in boost or when the car is shut off. Otherwise I'm em...

Anyone completely removed the PCV system before?

Without getting into all the complex details of why (turbo'd car) I want to see if anyone has completely removed a PCV system from a car so that the intake is no longer drawing air through the crank case of the motor. I hear from a lot of people that this air been drawn into the intake is more than ...

Re: And the 331 project finally begins...

Chris, pulling timing at idle to get rpms down isn't necessarily a hack if all other options are exhausted. It's info I picked up from some top notch tuners in the industry. Obviously pulling timing to compensate for a vacuum leak or something similar is a total hack. As for IAC motor I believe it s...

Re: And the 331 project finally begins...

I read that other thread and the issue of seeing a different AFR on each bank of cylinders is a mechanical fault that you need to address. I'm no expert but I've read quite a few tuning books to help me when I started tuning and they all point out differences in AFR between the banks of cylinders is...

Re: Quick-n-dirty toe in alignment after tierod replacement

whoo had me going there buddy lol. You had me worried there when you said it threw a rod. I figured oh damn motor's hosed but then read over that thread and you mean a pushrod jumped out. OK not so bad :) When someone says they "threw a rod" it means a connecting rod snapped and is usually...

Re: Subtle differences in the V8 Explorer over the years

Not insinuating. See my post at the top of the page :) lol
But yeah it was an AWD 2000. To be exact it was a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer but same thing different badging but yes it most definitely had an oil cooler between the oil filter and block that I had to remove.

Re: Subtle differences in the V8 Explorer over the years

Interesting. So either there were differences in the year 2000 or I was sold an older year and told it was a 2000.

I purchased a 2000 Explorer donor and it had the oil cooler.

Re: Quick-n-dirty toe in alignment after tierod replacement

Honestly I just eye ball it from about 10 or 15 feet in front of the car and dial it in close enough and then drive to a tire shop and have it done right. Tires are just to expensive to figure out whoops my alignment didn't work :)

Re: And the 331 project finally begins...

I sort of lost track over time but this is the 331 you built yourself right? Always a good feeling to hear a new motor you just built come to life. You'll definitely have some tuning issues with such a big change. I just dropped compression from 9.7:1 to 9.0:1 recently in my turbo'd civic and couldn...
