the ping is caused in your case by combustion temps not timming or compression.retarding is retarded.get the injectors then tune it right.with allum heads you should be able to use more timming than the old cast.but you can't .you will most likely burn valves or warp your new heads if you continue.

the 19'a are maxed.its not just the head flow its cubes and compression also.stock s/d 351 use 30's with e6 heads and 8.8: compression. if he keeps revs below 4500 he can get away with 19's maybe bad combo choices, get some fuel in there it will drop temps quickly do not tune by factory hegos you mi...

be carefull most older heads have non hardned(leaded gas) valve seats.

new seats and valves can cost 500-700 bucks to upgrade no bargain.just get a nice set of aftermarket. 50 hp more than any ported stock head will give you

mistake,forget using explorer stuff.use the motor and front accys.sell or swap the rest.
use a 97 4.0 ranger l/s rear
donot use any explorer drive train.trans is usless with out explorer pcm.
get an aod or manual trans

buy the helms evtm for your 97. supply new harness with 5 good grounds,kam,pcm power,starter relay,fuel pump relay,and vss .you should have enough to start and run.then wire in guages and accys like alt .the evtm is gold. it will tell you where ,what is.

the a9p will have a better auto, anti stall in gear at stop.iac program.
but if stuck with what you have for now.adjust idle stop higher,and re adjust tps after to <.95v

to really clear pcm,remove all wires from pos term of battery.ground pos cable.

the trans /o2 harness must match the motor harness.(example)the 97 trans harness will not match to any other year motor harness except for the 97 motor harness.what year harnesses are you using?

the c heads have no water xover thru intake,you need to externally connect water to head.easy fitting.the 2v are better than 4v.less detonation,better low tq.not as good as any windsor for low tq.the valve placement requires special pistons.they flow best with 4.10 + bore of an svo,boss or dart bloc...
