Well got another 92 ranger 4x4, stick and 2.9 for cheap so just going to swap that stuff in. Was so cheap I couldn't pass it up. Also got an old(can't figure out year yet) 289 for building up. Anyone know how to lock the 4wd system in to work all the time(manually)? I just want it for hunting season...

I have a better understanding now. I'll see what I can find. Afraid of junkyards because you never know how the drivetrain or motor will be.

Must be the oval throttle body with split butterflies? Explorer are not easy to find for cheap!!! The 5.0's are all in perfect shape. Dang ford needs to make weaker parts .

Also where do you guys buy a lighter 3-4 inch cowl hood for these trucks? Seems hard to find for a 92.
Want to save weight and love cowls.

The real advantage of the Explorer is the short front dress, good intake system and usually low miles on them. Lots, including Chris and Malcolm and several other at this site used the Explorer motor but converted back to the '93' type ignition system. Last I look on E-Bay there were about 50 motor...

Ya the aod seems like the right way to go for the power level and streetability. I guess I'll start pricing some exploder 5.0's until someone chimes in with the right year/years workable.

Wouldn't I save a ton of $$$$s going with just a carbed 302 with a c-4 behind it? What transfer to use with this?
Really only need heat and no a/c and should be able to tune a carb yet(been a few decades LOL). I know full of questions sorry.

Remember, even if the Xfer case is AWD, you can always turn the front hubs off so it isn't active. But if you really don't like AWD, then pull the trans/Xfer from an F150 that is true 4wd. True(never thought of expy being auto hubs). I wouldn't think that it would hurt mileage too bad either. Okay ...

Well finally got the truck picked up. Some surface rust but absolutely no dents so really good shape. This next weekend I'll pull the 2.8 and tranny. 1993 4x4 with blown 2.8l and 5 speed is the swap truck.
Sticker said 5.0 and it ran and drove like a champ . Going to pick it up next week and inspect it closer.

Going to look at a 89 ford van for a 100 bucks. Hopefully 302 with a c-4. Runs and drives so would be a start
